Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts has been named the world’s most sustainable hotel group for the second year running by world-renowned certification body Green Globe.
This was contained in a statement released by the organisation last week.
The international hospitality firm has as well been hailed as a “global sustainability leader” in the ‘Green Globe Report for the year 2017’, with more than 50% of its certified properties worldwide achieving the entity’s prestigious ‘Gold’ status – an accolade bestowed on hotels and resorts that have achieved Green Globe certification for five years or more.
According to the CEO of Green Globe, Guido Bauer, the recognition is a true indication of the consistent dedication that management and staff have put in and continue to give while doing the best for the planet and their people.
This feat comes after the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel was earlier this year awarded its sixth successive Green Globe Certification award, an accolade achieved only after being independently audited across 385 performance indicators and consistently meeting or exceeding the standards and criteria the certification process entails. The overall audit score grew from 73% to 81% this year.

General Manager of the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel, Axel Hauser, in a statement said “I am extremely proud of the team’s achievements and know that it has taken a great deal of work and dedication to achieve this fantastic result. The Green Globe Certification Award shows the hotel’s long term commitment to sustainability, involving and educating the whole team on how they can make a difference”.
For his part, President & CEO of Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts also in the same statement said, “adhering to Green Globe’s stringent criteria not only ensures we can legitimately meet our ambitions to protect and contribute to the destinations where our hotels and resorts are located, but also assures guests they are staying with a truly ‘green’ hotel group.”
The release further states that "in the hotel’s quest to sustainably utilise resources, Mövenpick Ambassador has invested over half a million dollars on six projects aimed at reducing energy consumption over the long term.
These include the diversion of steam from the boiler to the hotel dehumidifier to cut down on the energy used in heating dehumidifiers, the installation of an adiabatic cooling system and chiller plant management system, heat recovery from chillers, chiller power factor local correction and the installation of a duty cycle programmer on the pool pumps."
For the last 25 years, Green Globe has set the highest standards of sustainability certification for the travel and tourism industry.

The key requirement is for organisations to execute an active sustainability management plan that delivers performance in the areas of socio-economic contribution; environmental protection; and the preservation of culture and heritage.
These initiatives are in line with Mövenpick’s successful CSR programme SHINE, which focuses on three pillars - Environment, Employer and Social Sustainability - with Education an important thread common to each.
SHINE’s overarching aim is to give back to the communities and as a major facet of the Sustainability Management Plan, is crucial to Mövenpick achieving its Green Globe certification.
