The 20th anniversary celebration of St. Margaret
Mary Senior High Technical School, Dansoman SSNIT flat, has been marked in
Accra. The school founded by Rev. Fr. John Straathof, SVD admitted its first
batch of 20 students on 18th February 1997.
The anniversary which was started with a liturgical
celebration was officiated by the founder Rev. FR. John Straathof, together with Frs. Patrick Ofori SVD, Mathias
King SVD, Stephen Kofi Sakpaku, Abraham Dzibitor, SVD and Bernard Adjei SVD and was attended by parents, teachers, old students,
and a host of dignitaries.
In his homily, Rev. Fr. Stephen Kofi Sakpaku, an old
student of the school said the anniversary was a celebration of achievement and
hope. He advised the students to hold on to their future dreams, to be
determined and be disciplined in other to achieve their heart desires. He also
called on the old students to come together to rally support for the school.
For his part, the Chairman for the occassion, Mr.
Kwame Arhin, encouraged the students to take their learning seriously. He donated
an amount of GH¢ 5,000 towards the purchasing of logistics for the Home
Economics Department and the expansion of the school canteen.
Speaking at the function, the headmistress of the
school Mrs. Rose Buah Bassuah, lauded the effort of the founders for their
vision and foresight. According to her, the
school which currently has 1194 students and 80 teaching and non teaching staff
aims to give a holistic education experience to the students,
hence, the formation of clubs to help build students fit for society.
She expressed gratitude to Rev. Fr. John Straathof
SVD and the parishioners of Margaret Mary church, The PTA, Yamsco Computers,
Knight of Marshall, society of the Margaret Mary church and other individuals
who have contributed to the school in various forms.
The founder of the school Rev. Fr. John Straathof who
has spent 51 years in Ghana as a missionary priest expressed his excitement towards
the growth of the school. He encouraged the students to be good students and
obedient to their teachers, Make Jesus their friend and make use of the media
wisely.
The
anniversary was crowned with performances and cultural display by students
and fashion exhibitions to show case various talents unearth in the school. A
plague was aslo unveiled in his honour of the founder Rev Fr John Straathof
SVD.
St. Margaret Mary SHS has produced two Catholic priests, Frs. Stephen Kofi Sakpaku and Lawrence Agyapong and a host of people in various sectors of the Ghanaian economy but lacks facilities such as and administration block, a befitting canteen, an ICT center and an assembly hall among others.
